Seagull Says: Just Because It’s Hump Day Doesn’t Mean We’re Coasting
Midweek in the OBX: part serenity, part chaos, and a whole lot of wind-blown gossip.
🌊 TODAY’S TIDE (Weather + Surf Report)
🌧️ Weather
Rain early, then just enough drizzle to frizz your hair and cancel your beach picnic. High of 73° with SSE winds making everything feel stickier than it should. Chance of rain? 90%. So, yeah—bring the umbrella and the backup flip-flops. UV index is a 4, which still means “burn potential.” Tonight dips to 65° with clouds and a 15% chance of the skies behaving.
🏄♂️ Surf Report
The ocean’s throwing a bit of a tantrum today—messy and moody with onshore easterly winds wrecking any early morning vibe. Things might shape up (barely) after 3PM with possible 4–5 ft waves, but it’s still more “hold onto your bikini” than “catch a clean ride.” Bring low expectations and high patience. Pay attention to the red flag alert. Surfing is cool, but dying isn’t.
📰 HEADLINES + CHATTER
Because somebody has to keep tabs on this place.
🎉 Sanderling's Summer Glow-Up
The Sanderling Resort in Duck just dropped a 40th anniversary makeover like it’s hot. Think oceanfront indulgence with updated beachy-chic rooms, a glammed-up event space, and a restaurant from none other than James Beard winner Vivian Howard. The new spot? Theodosia—yes, that Theodosia—serving refined Southern coastal cuisine with a side of maritime mystery. Beachy picnics, ghost crab hunts, floral arranging, and mixology classes are also on deck. All very Outer Banks, just with better throw pillows.🐾 Pups + Pints for a Cause
On Friday, May 30, grab lunch and a leash at Frisco Bay Coastal Grill. From 12:00–2:30 p.m., OBX SPCA is bringing the pups for a meet-and-greet fundraiser. It’s the first of its kind on Hatteras Island and includes adoptable dogs, coastal views, and a portion of sales going straight to the shelter. Bonus: soundfront dining with dogs that won’t judge your second cocktail.🚩 Red Flag Alert
It’s a no-go for ocean dips today: HIGH rip current risk has turned all beaches from Duck to Ocracoke into danger zones. Stay dry or stick to the pool. If you’re even thinking about a swim, at least make it near a lifeguard—and maybe just don’t.

📍THE BEAK OF APPROVAL
🍺Swells'a Brewing Beer Company – Crafted for drifters, deep thinkers, and dogs who love sand.
Ever wondered if the moon is made of ribs or what it’s like inside a whale’s mouth? Same. That’s the kind of deep ocean pondering that led to Swells’a Brewing, a dog-friendly, beach-minded beer bar that’s slinging cold ones daily from their perch.
Crack a can, chase a swell, pet a pup, and maybe question the fabric of space-time—just another afternoon at Swells’a. Open every day at high noon for your spiritual (and slightly tipsy) alignment with the sea.
📍1802 S Virginia Dare Trail, KDH
Bonus: Your dog is welcome. Your existential crisis? Also welcome.
🚨 CRIME + SAFETY CORNER
Because you cannot make this stuff up.
📣 Southern Shores: Fashionably Late with the Arrest Announcement
The PD finally piped up about the May 9th string of vehicle break-ins on Palmetto Ln. Ki’Mari Shelton has been charged with 6 felonies for breaking and entering, plus a handful of misdemeanors. Apparently, several kids were involved too — juvenile petitions are on deck. Shoutout to home security cams for doing most of the legwork. Pro tip: if you want your crime announced promptly, consider a press release couriered by seagull. We announced this 2 weeks ago.🚸 Hit-and-Run Near Jockey’s Ridge
A 14-year-old was clipped by a side mirror while walking south on the west side of South Croatan Highway around 11:15 p.m. Sunday night. Thankfully, his injuries were minor and he was released from Outer Banks Health. Nags Head Police are calling it a hit-and-run. If you know who did it, maybe give ‘em a nudge — with consequences.🚨 Serious Charges in KDH
Penny R. Williams, 62, was arrested on May 23 in Kill Devil Hills after an investigation into child abuse. She’s now facing charges for Felony Second Degree Kidnapping and three counts of Felony Child Abuse. Her bond’s set at $150,000. Yikes.🚗 Minor Chaos in Moyock
Two-vehicle accident reported on the 536 block of Caratoke Highway. No injuries, minor damage, probably a major inconvenience. Classic Caratoke.
⛱️ VACAY OR STAY
🏡 FOR SALE: SOUTHERN SHORES, FULLY GLOWN-UP
This 4-bed, 2.5-bath Chicahauk stunner got the full treatment: new roof, new floors, new everything. Corner lot? Check. Screened porch with canal views? Yep. Ramp access and a detached workshop? You bet. It’s basically showing off at this point.
📍122 Twisted Tree Ct, Lot 490, Southern Shores | $729,900 | MLS# 129295
Bonus: It’s in an X flood zone, which in OBX-speak means you lucked out, big time.
🌊 VACAY: OH SO SANDY + CHARMING
This ain’t your average beach box. “Oh So Sandy” is a historic flat top that’s still standing and still slaying in Southern Shores. Three queen beds, one bathroom, and zero apologies. No dishwasher? No problem—there’s a screened porch with a coffee bar, a hammock for your midday existential crisis, and a fire pit for roasting both marshmallows and your travel companions.
📍Southern Shores, NC | Oh So Sandy!
Bonus: It’s giving retro realness with a side of salty air. Come for the charm, stay because you can’t stop bragging about it.
🕵️♀️ HEARD (In or On?) OBX
Because someone’s always saying something, and we’re definitely writing it down.
🐷A local’s pet pig was spotted paddling in a kiddie pool wearing a sun hat. No further notes.
😎Someone in Nags Head loudly asked a bartender if locals “use sunscreen or if your skin just adapts after a while.”
🔗 QUICK LINKS
⛴️Ferry Schedule – You can’t teleport to the Outer Banks (yet), so here’s how to float your way here the old-fashioned way.
🐾OBX SPCA Pet of the Week (more like every 10 days): Jet, a super cute pup, is ready to jet outta there and go home with you!
🌊Live Surf Cams – For “checking the surf,” but really just spying on beach traffic and seeing who already claimed your favorite spot.
💬Submit a Tip or Event – Got a hot lead, weird sighting, or something the seagulls should be squawking about? Slide it our way.
🧂FINAL PEEP FROM THE PERCH
If you made it this far, you’re basically a local now. Go ahead—forward this to someone who still says “the Outer Banks is nice.” We’ll wait.
Sign up. Stay salty. Be nosy.
